This thin section of New Raymer LL4 is one of over 100 that were deaccessioned by Arizona State University in 2014. We looked at some of the opaques in this sample back in September of 2021. Here we look at the section in “cross-polarized light” XPL. We’ll let the photos speak for themselves with only a few comments.
The section as we saw it in September 2021, in transmitted light.
Our thin section sample scanned with transmitted light while between two polarizing filters with the filters’ polarizing orientations offset (rotated) by 90 degrees, i.e. crossed. It is 28mm wide at the base.
Field of view is 8.6 mm wide.
Radial pyroxene chondrule is 3 mm tall.
Many clasts and chondrules in this meteorite are surrounded by opaque materials – metal, sulfides and fine-grained material.
Chondrule is about 2 mm in diameter.
Chondrule diameter is 2.7 mm.
One large and one small.
Chondrule with blue relict mineral grain.
A small porphyritic chondrule with a prominent rose-tinted relict grain. Field of view is 0.6 mm wide.
An odd feature. Field of view is 3 mm wide.
The hourglass pattern in this barred olivine chondrule might be a result of crystallographic twinning.
This section of a BO chondrule exposes bars edge-on on the left and more end-on on the right. Diameter is 0.34 mm.
