Primm and the other Roach Dry Lake Meteorites – Another effort to reconstruct fragmented meteorites

Monika Waiblinger on Roach Dry Lake in 2009 October, pointing to a 37gram meteorite that she just found.   It’s hard to say when this story started. It’s not always easy to pinpoint when a specific action precipitates a course of events, particularly when more than one story dovetails and over time forms a [...]

2012 Year-end Review A recap of the past year’s events and findings.

2012 Year-end Review A recap of the past year’s events and findings.   Well, it’s that time of year, where we take time to reflect on the events of 2012, and in the process we can make predictions, or at least, better resolutions for the coming year. 2012 January- Nevada meteorites The year 2012 starts [...]

The Hunt for Battle Mountain Meteorites

A photo gallery of my August 2012 trip to Battle Mountain, Nevada. There won’t be a “Bob’s Findings” article this month because I’ve returned to the strewn-field near Battle Mountain, Nevada, where a meteorite fell on the 22nd of August 2012 (UTC). The first find from this fall was found by this author on September [...]

Holbrook – 100th Anniversary (2012) – Meteorite Hunt

Images from the gathering of meteorite hunters celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Holbrook Meteorite fall. Sixteen (16) meteorite hunters showed-up in the Holbrook strewn-field at the very moment – when the fall had occurred – exactly 100 years later. Even though the 100th Anniversary day, July 19th 2012, came on a Thursday this year, [...]

The Whitmire (South Carolina) Bolide of February 13th 2012 The search for meteorites from this fireball-meteor still continues.

The Whitmire (South Carolina) Bolide of February 13th 2012 The search for meteorites from this fireball-meteor still continues.   Meteor makes headlines in The Whitmire News! (Wasn’t really a “meteor shower”, but hopefully, it was a meteorite shower;-)  Continuation of front-page article on page 2. (Actually, this was a better than average news article, compared [...]

Winter Drought of 2011-2012 in SW US – But not for meteorite finds.

Winter Drought of 2011-2012 in SW US But not for meteorite finds. There won’t be a “Bob’s Findings” article this month because it happens that Mother Nature has given a gift to all of us meteorite hunters, in the form of a VERY dry and mild winter, here in the Southwestern United States. This [...]

Hunting for Flädle at Ries Crater

Hunting for Flädle at Ries Crater We travel to Nördlingen Germany to find these impact-glass “bombs”.   June 2011 – this was the year that I finally made that return trip to Germany. It was a good time of year to revisit Southern Germany where I lived 40 years ago and met for the first [...]

Ron Hartman and the Lucerne Valley Meteorites

Ron Hartman and the Lucerne Valley Meteorites  The finder of the Lucerne Valley Meteorite was more than my colleague; he was my mentor and personal friend. This is the only image of Ron Hartman at Lucerne Dry Lake that I could find. Photo taken late-1963 / early-1964 by Ron Oriti. Even if Ron Hartman would [...]

Holbrook – 99th Anniversary (2011) – Meteorite Hunt Images from the Ruben Garcia/Jim Wooddell-hosted gathering of meteorite hunters.

Make no mistake, this was a GROUP meteorite-hunt. Maybe one of the largest group-hunts. Probably the largest one with the highest percentage of “beginner” hunters. (And I’ve led a couple of those kind of group-hunts.) Certainly, this was one of the largest group-hunts with the highest number of “first-ever” meteorite finds! And speaking of numbers, [...]

Ensisheim – Meteorite 2011 Images from the international gathering of meteorite aficionados.

This was the year that I finally made it to Ensisheim. For years I’ve been reading about and seeing the images from all of the meteorite collectors and dealers who attend this “Show”. But this was the year that I got the opportunity to return to Europe, so I made sure my trip would coincide [...]
