An Article In Meteorite Times Magazine
by Ruben Garcia
Welcome to “Ruben’s Hunting Grounds” a new Q & A forum dedicated to meteorite hunters. I believe this to be the first forum of its kind that will attempt to answer specific meteorite hunting questions.
When I was first asked to write a monthly column on the subject of meteorite hunting I was both flattered and humbled at the same time. I was flattered that Meteorite-Times was impressed enough with my work to ask me. I was also humbled because there are so many good/successful meteorite hunters that are at least as qualified.
I’ve been hunting meteorites since 1998 and know that for a “newbie” there is a definite learning curve. When I started I was fortunate enough to have found several people that went out of their way to help me. In one way or another they schooled me as to where and how to find meteorites, and so via this monthly column I’d like to repay the favor.
If you happen to be unfamiliar with my work you can learn more about me in this very issue of Meteorite-Times Magazine. Coincidentally I did a short interview for the “Meteorite People” section before we had really considered doing this forum. I also have a website www.mr-meteorite.net that is loaded with pictures and stories of some of my past meteorite hunting adventures.
I believe that this forum should be fun as well as educational. Therefore I would like to involve you the reader as to what questions will be answered. I will try to answer the questions presented as fully and honestly as possible.
Keep in mind that there are certain questions that I can not tackle on this forum. We think it best to “steer clear” of topics that include BLM issues, ownership, and certain physical locations to hunt. Either because I’ve been sworn to secrecy or because answering such questions just wouldn’t be prudent.
Topics such as types of metal detectors used, hunting by sight alone, or what type of area would be conducive to finding meteorites would be welcome. Of course these are just a few topics and I’m sure you can think of many more.
Quite often I am asked either in person or through email questions regarding meteorite hunting. I feel like there are so many people that would love to find a meteorite but are just not sure how to begin. It is for this reason that I am quite sure that we will have a lot to talk about.
So for this first installment of Ruben's Hunting Grounds I'd like to ask you to participate.
Please email questions and topics that you would like to see covered in future articles to: Meteoritemall@yahoo.com website: www.mr-meteorite.net
