Broken Australites Can Reveal Much

Everyone loves complete buttons but with a little examination, a real
appreciation and interest will develop for broken specimens as well.

Specimen weighs 2.307 grams.  Jim weighed it of course!

This specimen exhibits exceptional ring wave structure.  Upon closer examination look
how the exposed bubble changed the air flow pattern causing distortions in the ring wave.

The above image shows that the flange is not directly welded to the core.
This must be why there are a much greater number of cores than flanged buttons.

Jim made and photographed this thin section showing the internal flow lines of the glass.
