This feature is devoted each month to one of the personalities within the meteorite community. This month we are delighted to share an interview we had with Meteorite Dealer Serge and the Team of Comet Meteorite Shop.
What or who got you interested in meteorites and how old were you when you got your first meteorite?
Originally my profession is geologist. On graduating from prospecting institute my friend (now he is in our team) invited me to see one of the greatest Russian Meteorite collection. It was in 1992, I was 24 years old. In 1995 I joined my first trip to Sikhote-Alin, where I found my first meteorite.
Do you still have it?
Do you have special areas of interest that you focus on in regards to meteorites (thin sections, photography, chemistry, age dating. etc)?
Our team makes almost all existing work on meteorites: We hunt meteorites, find them, make photos, prepare thin sections, study them through microscope, receive microprobe analyzes, classify (I classify ordinary chondrites, others we ask for help from other scientists), prepare samples for selling (cutting, polishing, etc.), and deal our meteorites.
Does your Family share in your interest in meteorites?
They understand that it is interesting and useful job, but they do not understand about meteorites.
Do you have any special approaches to collecting? (Type collection, only stones, only irons, only by aesthetics, etc. or any and all that you like.)
Do you mind saying how many locations your collection represents?
Our team has no real collection. We have a storehouse with almost all our finds.
In what ways do you use your computer for meteorites?
Computer is one of my best helpers. I have a web site and update it through the computer, I receive and send a lots of e-mails to/from my friends, dealers, customers, etc, We make images for meteorites and so on.
Do you ever hunt for meteorites?
As I said we are team of meteorite hunters. Our team with me has been several times to Sikhote-Alin and lots of other meteorite and impact places of Russia, Oman, Morocco, Turkmenistan, Byelorussia...
What is your favorite meteorite in your collection?
It is very difficult to chose between our finds: twelve lunars, three shergottites, four eucrites, howardite, two ureilites, two acapulcoites, CH, CM, CK, nice Sikhotes and many others...
What is your favorite overall if it is not the one above?
I was shocked by looking at Lafayette and Tucson Ring in the Smithsonian.
What makes these of special interest?
The best shape I ever seen...
What meteorites are currently on your wish list?
For me my wish list is the wish list of new finds of our team. We have not found yet not a single aubrite, winonaite, brachinite, angrite, CI... and of course new Martian, lunars and other rare and ordinary types best shapes are on that list.
What methods have been most successful in building your collection?
(Buying at shows, from dealers by mail, auctions on the web, trading... etc) Hunting
Do you also collect related materials like impact glasses, breccias, melts, tektites, shocked fossils, native iron rocks etc?
Impactites and tektites are also in our interest.
