NWA 978 is a Rumuruti R type chondrite. Actually an R3.8. Many distinct chondrules can be seen in the photograph. The stone is also crisscrossed by many black lines. Since most R type stones are shocked to some degree or another and many have impact melt, one wonders if the black lines are shock related. This is the case with many other less exotic types of meteorites.
Rumuruti type chondrties were the last subclass of chondrites to be designated. And with until recently very few member in the class it was a type absent from most collections. With the recovery of several in the last few years from the North African areas it is now a class that is available.
